Anne Boniface

As a historian of the modern United States and of science, I study foreign policy and health, with my current research exploring the intersections of U.S. militarism and psychiatry. Broadly speaking, I am interested in the evolving field of war and society; the history of mental health care provision in the United States; and the politics of American interventionism in the twentieth century. My research draws on national, medical, and personal archives to integrate perspectives from an array of actors: career diplomats, army generals, drafted G.I.s, newly-minted psychiatrists, and foreign aid workers, to name a few.

 

Currently, I am finishing my PhD in History at Harvard University on a Dissertation Completion Fellowship. From 2024-2026, I was an Ernest May Predoctoral Fellow in History and Policy at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School. In 2023, I was a Fellow at the Clements Center for National Security, University of Texas at Austin, Summer Seminar in History and Statecraft. And in 2022, I was a Summer Fellow in Military History at the National World War II Museum and Society for Military History.

 

I hold a Master of Arts degree from Harvard University (2022) and a Bachelor of Science in Journalism (2018) degree from Northwestern University. There, I received Honors in History and in Journalism, and I graduated summa cum laude.

 

When I am not in the archives or the classroom, I enjoy indulging in reality television and joining my colleagues for trivia at Camberville breweries. I can also be found planting flowers or walking the Castle Island loop in South Boston with my dog, Oakley.
