Teaching Philosophy

In the digital age, when the world often appears as binary as the 1s and 0s that ushered in its

technological transformation, the humanities—and history in particular—offer an opportunity to think

through the world’s messy human complexity. History promises few easy answers. It complicates

worldviews and leaves room for uncertainty, inviting its students and practitioners to change their minds

when new evidence emerges. In teaching history, I have the privilege of sharing this habit of mind. I

delight in welcoming students to the discipline, whether for a short time, as they fulfill area studies

credits and graduation requirements, or for a long time, as they become thesis writers, graduate students,

or lifelong lovers of history. Through teaching that emphasizes meaning-making and approachability, I

hope to encourage students to ask difficult questions and to carry that curiosity with them, wherever

their studies may lead.
